Rogoznica is a peaceful Mediterranean town, situated in the center of the peninsula, once an islet called Kopara that was artificially connected to the mainland in the latter half of the 19th century. Most of the island is covered with forests, and in the inhabited area, old stone houses prevail, exuding the Mediterranean atmosphere of the past. This place is known as one of the most beautiful and safest ports, and therefore, it is frequented by sailors. The population is engaged in agriculture, fishing, and tourism. Be sure to visit Rogoznica’s cultural heritage: the Church of St. Nicholas, the Church of St. John the Trogirian, the parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Heaven, Our Lady of the Chapels, and the remains of the fort built by the French at the top of the settlement. It is believed that there was a Greek colony of Heraclea in the Rogoznica area. As for natural phenomena, visit the salt lake “Dragon’s Eye”. Rogoznica is known for its beautiful pebble, concrete, and stone beaches where everyone can find their own corner. The place also has its marina, Marina Frapa, located in the Soline bay, of high quality, and possessing 400 boat berths. Sports and recreation enthusiasts can enjoy numerous water sports, hiking, and many other activities. In the evening, take a walk by the sea, visit restaurants, bars, and enjoy Rogoznica’s fishermen’s night.
Did you know? According to legend, in 1722, the fisherman Ivan M. Bogović Tumburko discovered an image of the Virgin Mary depicting her visit to her cousin Elizabeth while fishing around the cape of the Gradina peninsula. The locals, along with the priest of the time, decided to build a chapel at that spot. In 1887, black smallpox ravaged Rogoznica, claiming up to 40 lives a day. The faithful then decided to walk barefoot to the shrine of the Virgin Mary. From that day on (January 24), people stopped dying, and the sick recovered.
